Emergencies since the fall of Communism up to those in progress. During the first decade after the collapse of communism, Albania has passed most of the time in crisis and emergency situations. Caritas Albania was adapted to the difficulties and needs of Albanians during this period of transition. During these years of activity, emergency situations have occupied most of the activities of Caritas Albania; Albanian people in this period had major needs material assistance, to survive hardship, disasters, floods, social anarchy and consequences of the Kosovo war. During the last 6 years, Caritas has tried to improve service to emergency situations to come closer to people in need. Humanitarian Emergencies of 1992-1995, during the first years of the restoration of democracy found Albania fragile in conditions of extreme poverty. Political conflict was accompanied by a general chaos. The Reduction of production, closing of plants and factories, the dissolving of the system of state agricultural enterprises, caused a number of social wounds In this grievous climate after a 50-year persecution, the first that were offered to serve Albania without any claim were those few remaining missionaries and sisters and foreign priests. As a body of Catholic Church, Caritas was led by solidarity and love for those who suffer. The crisis of the country enabled the establishment of stable relations with other Caritases in Europe and foreign donors. The needs for help that appeared in every country, always found response of goodwill. In total, the Humanitarian Emergency '92-'95,that entered Albania were 8 252 tones of aid from Caritas, machinery including comprehensive articles on the function of helping the Albanian people. This aid consisted in: Food and clothing, 4 502.5 tones Medicines, health equipment, 103.4 tones. Other 3 646.2 tones Emergency "Floods 1995-1996" September 1995-January 1996, constitutes a period during which various areas of the country were faced with great material damages. Emergency after the destruction of pyramid schemes in 1997 Micro projects or post emergency projects were implemented and extended in March 1997 - December 1998, all over Albanian territory. With the destruction of pyramid schemes, the country was found in a situation of weakening the state, which brought the opening of the arms depots. Thus, the situation was immensely complicated and riots reflected directly in a drastic decline of the economy.Read more... Kosovo Emergency 1999 Without any hesitation, Kosovo emergency can be considered as the culminating moment, of the whole activity extended to the arch of first 10-years activity of Caritas Albania. In the core humane and pastoral plan, the needs that the refugees had since the very beginning , imposed, rapid action and perfect organization. Basis of the extent of the emergency program, or even applicable for the formation of network conditions, would certainly find the solution through cooperation with Diocesan Caritases and with the permanent structures of the church. Snow (December 2001-January 2002) The intervention of CA to help the people to get over this emergency situation consisted in economical assistance of 7796 persons and also in the delivery of about 165,5 tones of food. The heavy grounds of snow isolated all the North and Northeast of Albania during the end of 2001, and brought a lot of problems in their lives and aggravated the conditions of living.
